Is The Quran Enough (Part 2)
Narrated Al-Miqdam ibn Ma’dikarib:
The Prophet (SallAllah-u-Alaihi-wa-Sallam) said: Beware! I have been given the Qur’an and something like it, yet the time is coming when a man replete on his couch will say: Keep to the Qur’an; what you find in it to be halaal treat as halaal, and what you find in it to be haraam treat as haraam …..
[Abu Dawood: Kitab ul Sunnah, Sanad: Sahih]
[Book 40, Number 4587]
What Allah revealed to our beloved Prophet (SallAllah-u-Alaihi-wa-Sallam) is the truth.
He (SallAllah-u-Alaihi-wa-Sallam) warned us against false Prophets and numerous evils that we would face in the near future.
From the above hadith it is evident that we were also warned against ‘Quran only’ ideology.
As the hadith told us, there are people who believe that Quran alone was revealed to the Prophet (SallAllah-u-Alaihi-wa-Sallam), their claim is also same for the other Prophets that they only received their respective books and nothing else, suggesting that the books or scriptures they received is Islam, and that was the only commands a Prophet received from Allah.
Lets examine their claim in the light of Quran.
Point 1 :
“And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Ibraheem) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you. So what do you think? He said: O my father! Do that which you have been commanded”
[Surah Saaffat (37), ayah 102]
Both the Prophets [Alaihi salam] are considering Ibrahim (Alaihi salam) s’ dream a command of Allah.
Was this part of the book?
Point 2 :
When Ibraheem (Alaihi salam) heard of the torment being sent on Lut (Alaihi Salaam ) ‘s people.
‘So when fear had gone away from Ibrahim and good news came to him, he began to plead with Us for Lut’s people.’
[Surah Hud: Ayah 74]
‘O Ibrahim! leave off this, surely the decree of your Lord has come to pass, and surely there must come to them a chastisement that cannot be averted.’
[Surah Hud: Ayah 76]
Was Ibraheem (Alaihi Salaam ) ‘s pleading part of the scripture he received?
This proves Allah sent his revelation to him, which wasn’t always part of the scripture received.
Point 3:
“O Yahya! take hold of the Book with might”: and We gave him hukm even as a youth”
[Surah Maryam, ayah 12]
The word hukm means “wisdom”, even if we disagree with the translation still we can’t deny the fact that Yahya [Alaihi salam] received something before the book.
Point 4:
‘He said: “O Adam! Tell them their names.” ‘
[Surah Baqarah: ayah 32]
‘We said: “O Adam! dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden; and eat of the bountiful things therein as (where and when) ye will; but approach not this tree, or ye run into harm and transgression.”
[Surah Baqarah: Ayah 35]
Allah is giving commands & talking to Adam (Alaihi Salaam ).
‘Then did Satan make them slip from the (garden), and get them out of the state (of felicity) in which they had been…’
[Surah Baqarah: Ayah 36]
‘Then learnt Adam from his Lord words of inspiration…’
[Surah Baqarah: Ayah 37]
Allah even taught him some words.
‘there comes to you Guidance from me, whosoever follows My guidance, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. ‘
[Surah Baqarah: Ayah 38]
Allah promised him guidance in the future but before that Allah was talking to him, this proves Adam (Alaihi Salaam ) received just more then a book.
Point 5:
‘So when he came to it, a voice was uttered: O Musa:’
‘ “Verily I am thy Lord! therefore (in My presence) put off thy shoes: thou art in the sacred valley Tuwa. ‘
‘And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed:’
[Surah Ta-Ha: Ayah 11 till 13]
Was this initial conversation of Allah with Musa (Alaihi Salaam ) part of the Tavrat?
Did from day one Allah ‘s revelation was part of the Tavrat?
This proves Musa (Alaihi Salaam ) received more then Tavrat.
Point 6:
“We have sent among you a Messenger of your own, rehearsing to you Our Signs, and sanctifying you, and instructing you in book and Wisdom, and in new knowledge.”
[Surah Baqarah(2), ayah 151]
“He sent down to you the Book and Wisdom, for your instruction.”
[Surah Baqarah(2), ayah 231]
“Allah gave him (Dawood Alaihi salam) kingdom and wisdom, and taught him of what He pleased”
[Surah Baqarah(2), ayah 251]
“And He will teach him (Eisa Alaihi salam) the Book and the wisdom and the Tavrat and the Injeel.”
[Surah Aale Imran (3), ayah 48]
“Behold! Allah took the covenant of the prophets, saying: “I give you a Book and Wisdom; then comes to you a messenger”
[Surah Aale Imran (3), ayah 81]
These are the only few ayahs which prove more then just the book was revealed.
In many places Allah says ” kitab wo hikma “.
They suggest that the word “wo” in Arabic text stands for explanatory meaning the book & wisdom are the same thing.
Their claim can’t be justified as in many ayahs if we fit their pattern of translation then the whole meaning would become odd.
Point 7:
‘She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them; then We sent her our angel, and he appeared before her as a man in all respects.’
[Surah Maryam: Ayah 17]
‘She said: “I seek refuge from thee to (Allah) Most Gracious: (come not near) if thou dost fear Allah.” ‘
[Surah Maryam: Ayah 18]
‘He said: I am only a messenger of your Lord: That I will give you a pure boy.’
[Surah Maryam: Ayah 19]
Allah sent his message through a angel, which scripture or book did Maryam (Alaihi Salaam ) receive?
Conclusion:
Allah sent revelations to the Prophets and Non-Prophets in different forms, it is not necessary that all were part of their respective book or scripture.
Quran is the law book which is to be explained keeping in mind the Prophet (SallAllah-u-Alaihi-wa-Sallam)’s hadiths.
“We have revealed to you the Reminder that you may make clear to men what has been revealed to them”
[Surah Nahl, ayah 44]
The reminder was revealed on Prophet Muhammad (SallAllah-u-Alaihi-wa-Sallam) so he could explain it.
What Muhammad (SallAllah-u-Alaihi-wa-Sallam) explained is preserved in the form of hadiths.
